As we soon approach 2019 it should be on everyone’s mind that Microsoft will be ending its support of PC’s running on Windows 7 and network infrastructure running on Windows Server Windows Icon End of Life 20202008 and 2008 R2 in January 14, 2020. A year might seem a long way away from now, however, be advised that waiting to address this until the last minute can leave your business in an unnecessary scramble.

What does this mean? Keep in Mind Window 7 and Sever 2008 were developed a decade ago so the technology behind them is old. There are plenty of reasons why you’ll want to address the impending retirements before the end of 2019, mostly due to the potential risks of running a business on unsupported system platforms. Here are just a few reasons:

Once the end of life goes into effect newly discovered vulnerabilities will not be resolved.

This increases the odds that your network will be susceptible to malware attacks and viruses.

Coders with nefarious intentions will be encouraged to find breaches in Windows 7 and Server 2008 at a much higher tick knowing they will go unnoticed.

• Unsupported workstations and networks = Easy Prey.

Business and customer data is at risk.

As time passes, obsolescence sets in creating compatibility issues with mission critical software (ERP). Each time your software gets updated it becomes more incompatible with your unsupported operating systems, which can create all sorts of issues including loss of functionality and data corruption.

Once Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 fall out of support, third party applications will fall in line and no longer support those versions as there is no incentive to support legacy systems.

Browsers such as Google Chrome will no longer automatically update on Windows.

If your business operates under guidelines such as DCAA, HIPAA, etc. You will be out of compliance.

Running Windows 7 and Server 2008 means your business is operating on old hardware increasing the likelihood of unplanned outages.

Old hardware and unsupported operating systems is a recipe for costly disaster recovery efforts and loss of time and revenue.

How can you prepare?

You can start by consulting with your internal IT department or your outsourced IT provider. If you have neither seek out a reputable business technology consulting firm for advice.  Establish a project scope and budget for Windows 7 desktop and Windows Sever 2008 or 2008 R2 infrastructure replacement for 2019. Dedicate time to thoroughly evaluate the new technologies that are available in order to make an informed decision. This may include making the determination to maintain your network infrastructure on premise, move your entire workload to the cloud—e.g., Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud Platform--, or choose a hybrid approach that may include both on premise and cloud options applied to both business applications and infrastructure. For example, Exchange versus Office 365 or G Suite.

30 Years of Rave Reviews

I’ve sent more than one shining Michael endorsement. The whole company kicks ass.

We have been a client of Nims & Associates for over ten years. Chris has implemented and maintained our network for all of those years. As our network and our needs have changed and grown, Chris has provided excellent support to move us forward. Over the years I have come to know several of the…

Bill has far exceeded my expectations. I am happy to have another Super Technician to rely on for MAS200.
Thank you for explaning what you did in an understandable way. You're very patient working with such a small company and treating us as though we were a huge corporation.

We are very satisfied with the professional demeanor of both Tessa and Michael and their willingness to go above and beyond the scope of their expectations to solve our computer-related issues. The immediate and personal attention we receive from Nims when our Firm has an IT issue is impressive, to…

We are impressed with response times and the general aptitude of your support group. This stands in stark contrast to some of the experiences with other IT resources we’ve patronized in the past.

Our Yardi conversion was challenging. Hiring Nims and in turn working with Marco was the smartest thing we did to assist in this transition. His contribution was priceless. My staff and Board both agree it would have been a nightmare without Nims (Marco).

I was going to say it was the smartest…

Nims and Associates are the best support company I have ever worked with. They get back to my every problem or question in record time. They have been able to help or fix every problem I have come up with. Bill and or Bob are very knowledgeable with all my MASS 200 problems. I would and have…

Since we switched hosts to Network Solutions, we've had nothing but continuous problems with email and sessions timing out preventing us from opening our online store. Joel went out of his way to solve our problem. This means the world to us. Joel listened and accommodated our needs first before…

Since our bank told us we need to become PCI compliant, we found lots of holes and “open doors” on our servers, hosting, website etc. Chris closed up them and Tim has helped with the all the other annoying daily problems we have had, and they both do it with a smile and a reassuring, calming tone…

We’re getting rave reviews on the new e-newsletter. I just want to let you know how grateful we all are for your help on this project—your great direction, patience and support are invaluable.

We would NEVER have gone this far without you!

At a time when it may seem like good customer service is at all time low and we hear so many negatives about many companies and their employees, it’s a pleasure to be able to send along our positive comments regarding Nims & Associates … and more specifically about Chris. Chris has worked our…

We are very impressed with josh…he seems very knowledgeable and he communicates well…and he just seems like a nice person also…basically our dream consultant….

Again, we’re really impressed with josh and would not hesitate to recommend Nims to anyone.

I worked with Nims when at another company ... you don't have to tell me what a fantastic company Nims is.

....and, thank you for all YOU do. We are able to actually breathe easier knowing you're taking care of people. We have trusted you from the get-go because of your high intelligence, your ease at taking in and integrating huge amounts of new knowledge, and your grace and calmness in taking care of…
