lifepreserver dataseaIn information technology, backup refers to making copies of data so that these additional copies may be used to restore the original after a data loss event. These additional copies are typically called "backups." Backups are useful primarily for two purposes. The first is to restore your data following a complete system failure or other disaster (called disaster recovery). The second is to restore small numbers of files after they have been accidentally deleted or corrupted. 

In the modern era of computing there are many different types of data storage devices that are useful for making backups. There are also many different ways in which these devices can be arranged to provide geographic redundancy, data security, and portability.

A key concept of backing up is to be sure that you have multiple copies of your data on different systems or media that can be removed from your primary location.  If you copy your data to another computer in your office, that computer won't be of much use if your office burns down.  If you copy your data to a single CD, DVD, or tape, you'll have no recovery option if something has happened to that CD, DVD, or tape while it was in storage. 

The best backup schemes use mutiple tapes or disks that can be removed from your office.  Backing up over the Internet to service providers works well for small systems, but not for large database or accounting systems where a complete restore could take days.

You need to have confidence that the process is working as expected and work to define measurements and validation techniques. It is also important to recognize the limitations and human factors involved in any backup scheme.

MAS 90 and MAS 200's Daily Transaction Register update work-flow (from the  sub-ledger) has changed with Paperless Office.  Before Paperless Office, if a sub-ledger register was updated but not the Daily Transaction Register, then on the next update, any prior journal entries would be included on the current Daily Transaction Register.  Not anymore.
