Unfortunately there is no full proof way to avoid malware but there are steps you can take to reduce the chances of getting a malware infection. Here are 10 easy tips to reduce your risk for malware:
- Update your operating system, browsers, and plugins
- Enable click-to-play plugins
- Remove software you don’t use (especially legacy programs)
- Read emails with an eagle eye
- Do not call fake tech support numbers
- Do not believe the cold callers
- Use strong passwords and/or password managers
- Make sure you’re on a secure connection
- Log out of websites after you’re done
- Use firewall, antivirus, anti-malware, and anti-exploit technology
Here some additional tips for best practices:
- Watch out for social engineering - Be mindful of emails that seem legititmate yet out of place asking you for login--e.g., emails from your bank etc., and bogus tech support requests.
- Practice safe and responsible browsing
- Layer your security - invest in security software and make sure software and operating system patches are always up to date.
