At the urging of the tech lobby President Biden signed an executive order to address the growing chip shortage as technology giants Apple, Sony and others raised concerns over recent shortages. The shortages in components threaten to slow down production of many devices including smartphones like the iPhone, computers, gaming consoles, and other hardware devices. The shortage in semi-conductors have been attributed to multiple factors including the worldwide COVID Pandemic and trade policies that were put in place against China by the prior administration, which have made it difficult for US companies to work with Chinese chip manufacturers. The executive order will require the federal government to conduct a 100-day review of supply chains in critical industries which include semi-conductors in efforts to reduce U.S reliance on foreign made critical materials.
